Curly Kneebone of Mangrove Creek

Curly Knee bone, aka, Archibald Kneebone was a local character on Mangrove Creek working many of the older traditions associated with boat building, oyster farming and prawning. Curly’s shed towards the entrance to Mangrove Creek opposite Triangle Island is still standing surrounded by the remnants of oyster shells and the uprights of a jetty that was swept away in a storm in the 90s.

Previously apprenticed to a boat builder up the coast, Curly built boats, fished and prawned from the slipway on the creek opposite his house along Wisemans Ferry Road, Spencer. He was also involved in oyster farming - he cut up the black Mangrove (Avicennia germinans) for the oyster farmers who were using the stick method of oyster cultivation and later on ran some oyster leases at Mullet or Mooney Mooney Creeks
